I love all holidays, some more than others, but all of them are better when you have kids. Let's just say I may have a new favorite, St. Patricks Day! Our sweet, tiny Jaxston Lee decided to make his appearance on March 17, 2015.
One Friday night in February I snuck in to do another ultrasound with Talisha just for fun and to make sure he was head down (at my appt. earlier in the week Dr. Oveson asked if he thought she would sneak in to check on his position for sure). While she was doing the ultrasound she noticed that the baby was measuring behind. I had a doctor appointment 5 days later so we decided if he said something I would say something about the ultrasound. At my doctor appointment I heard him tell the nurse my measurements (which were also behind) but he didn't seem to have any concerns. Later that night I was talking to Talisha and she told me that Dr. Oveson had come and talked to her later that day at work. He asked her what we she had seen on the ultrasound. She told him that the baby was measuring small, and he said he was probably going to order another "official" ultrasound. I went to the doctor the next week, where I was measuring small again. We talked about my measurements and the ultrasound. He decided I needed to have another ultrasound and be seen weekly a few weeks sooner than I had planned. I went for the ultrasound and baby boy was measuring a little bigger (from what Talisha and I could remember) but was still smaller than he should have been.
The next week at the doctor we discussed the need for the baby to come early if he wasn't growing. Trenton happened to be there for some of this appointment because I had taken Trayson in to finish up his vaccinations before the baby came and for Kindergarten registration requirements. We all decided that getting the baby here early was best if he wasn't growing. The doctor decided to check me so Trenton took Trayson and left. I was at a 2, but the baby was still pretty high, so I was sent for a stress test. Doctor Oveson wanted a stress test done that day (March 11) and again on Friday, so it was decided that I would be done with work the next day (too many appointments to work around for a teacher). He also wanted an ultrasound (where they sit and watch the baby for 30 minutes) done on Friday too. If everything checked out fine I would just see the doctor on Monday (March 16th) and a decision on an induction would be made unless I went into labor on my own. Everything checked out fine so I just waited around all weekend hoping to go into labor myself before Monday's doctor appointment.
Monday rolled around, I dropped Trayson off at my mom's and headed to the doctor. Nothing had really changed, so it was decided that I would be started that night. I went home to gather my things, make final arrangements for Addi and Trayson, and wait for the hospital to call. I sat around all day, a nervous mess, and no phone call. Trenton decided to stay at work as long as he could. Tammy and I finally decided to walk from her house to my house to get Addison from piano lessons just up the street. By the time we got back to Tammy's there was still no phone call and I was tired. Around 4:30 I text Talisha to ask if she knew if all the L&D rooms were full (a lot of babies had been and were still being born each day in March). She said she didn't think they were. I finally gave in and called myself so I could figure out what I needed to do with the other two kiddos. They told me to plan on 8:00, but she would call for sure. So, Kloie and I went on the same walk as earlier, and then we ate dinner at Trenton's parents while we waited for another call. Around 7:40 the call came, only she told me that they had just had an OB who was in labor walk in so there wasn't room….so frustrating. Talisha called the L&D head nurse to see why I kept getting put off. She felt really bad and told her that they would get me in that night because my doctor really wanted me started. Finally at 10:00 they called and said to come. We finished getting the kids bathed and where to Tracy and Tammy's for the night and then headed out.
By 10:30 I was hooked up to the monitors and ready to go. The nurse told me they would monitor me for 30 minutes before starting the cervix cream. After 30 minutes the nurse came back in and said I was contracting every 3 minutes on my own. I could only feel them in my back. Looking back my back had been sore since going on the walks earlier in the day. I just attributed it to being huge, and way out of shape. She consulted with the on call doctor (Dr. Poff) and they decided not to administer the cream because it count intensify my contractions and put stress on the baby. So… long story short. My contractions got more intense and I kept progressing on my own. By 2:00 a.m. I was ready for an epidural. By 4:00 a.m. I was at a 9 according to the nurse so she called the doctor. By 4:30 Dr. Oveson had arrived (after speeding down the canyon). I was at an 8 according to him, so he broke my water. Sometime around 5:30 he came to check me again and said they needed to finish getting the room prepped before my body pushed the baby out on its own. After 3 short rounds of pushing baby boy joined joined our family. He was perfect at 6 pounds 9 ounces and 20 inches long, with tons of dark curly hair. Trenton said he sounded a little funny so it took a few more minutes that normal for him to get measured and checked out, but everything turned out just fine.
We spent the day getting visitors, feeding the hungry baby, and trying to give him a name. Finally on Wed. March 18 we decided (practically right before getting released) on Jaxston Lee Olsen. We are thrilled to have him as part of our little family, and I am super thankful that I was able to go on my own:)
